My name is Charlotte Evensen and I am a language arts teacher, I work at a high school in Downey.
I'm also the AVID coordinator.
I teach because, as an immigrant myself, I recognize that education is the only equalizer
in a broken world.
I teach because of children like Hector, who have been brought to this country, who do
not speak the language.
They don't know the culture, they don't know anyone.
And yet they're placed in a new language, a new system, and he has to bear the burden
of success for his entire family here and abroad.
I teach because of children like Edna, a daughter of ours who had no hope, who grew up with
violence, who grew up with abuse,
who did not expect to be alive, and the other week she ran into my classroom with a letter
of college acceptance.
I teach because I recognize that God has placed a passion in my heart for children, a love
for learning, a love for justice,
and a knowledge that education and the love of Christ is the only equalizer. I teach because
God has given me a calling.
