The Brain Injury Rehab Outpatient Services here at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation
Hospital, is actually a continuum of care from our in-patients to day patients to out-patients.
I think what's really important to understand, is that, uh, with a brain injury, uh, no matter
what it's caused from, whether it's trauma, illness, tumour, um, is that, for, um, for
our children adolescents, there's the event. Um, but then what happens, what's really,
um, important, is to know what's going to be happening within the future.
So, even though, quite often, our families are only coming back for a visit with us once
a year, on average, it's really important to have that check-in. We don't want to miss,
um, opportunities where we can be supportive to them, so they don't get to a point where
they're not feeling very successful. Another key component, even though we see
children adolescents coming in to us, the other key component is, when, they outgrow
our service when they're 18 and 19. And, so, the other piece we really work on, from about
the age of 16 and up, is really called Transitions, and, what's going to happen after us, and,
we're very fortunate, um, in collaboration with work we did with Toronto Rehab, with
the development of a Lifespan Clinic at Toronto Rehab, Rumsey Road site, just at the other
end of our building here. So, that's another piece, is, as they're coming in, we certainly,
um, help them plan for the time that they're going to be leaving us.
