I am Sophie I am a third year student at York St John studying a Joint Honours in Film Studies
and Media. My course is generally theory of film rather
than practical film although you do have the option to take modules in practical film if
you want. The main facilities that I use on my course
are just the books, like we do come into the Mac lab sometimes and we use the University's
computers but the main resources are the books and there a plenty there's always more than
one copy of each book so that you're not struggling to find one.
In second year you get offered to do a module called Working with Words where you get the
opportunity to find a work placement of your own or the University provides a placement,
I did mine blogging for NAWE which is the National Association for Writers in Education,
I got some work experience doing that. Support is very good from the teaching staff
, if you want to meet them for anything you just have to email them or they do put tutorials
up on the Tutorial Booker available on Moodle, but if there is none available just email
them and they'll always make time to see you if you have any issues with your work.
One of the modules I have enjoyed the most is the gender module I have done this year
because my dissertation was specifically on gender and sexuality.
I would recommend coming to an Open Day so that you can talk to the members of staff
and see what each module is like and whether it's the right course for you. Like some people
want a mixture of theory and practical, which you do have the choices but it's primarily
theory. A lot of the courses when you go and you look
for Film Studies they're half practical half theory or all practical and York St John offers
you a separate course for practical and a separate course for theory so I wanted to
go specifically for theory so it was my first choice.
