I belong to the Haratin community.
The term "Haratin" refers to
former slaves
of black African descent
who were enslaved in the past
who have lost their customs
traditions and African language
with few managing to escape this situation
What can be done? Many things...
First, the problem must be recognised
and understood,
that the resolution of this problem
does not lie exclusively with the country itself
as the authorities lack the will
so they must be assisted.
Foreign Aid to Mauritania
must be directly linked with this issue
No foreign aid should arrive
without establishing concrete mechanisms
to resolve this problem
mechanisms which are verifiable
We have to send observers
to monitor the situation in the country.
We have to help the country
to improve its education system
education is the foundation
the solution required
We have to help local NGOs
and human rights defenders
to carry out investigations
and help the slaves in reporting complaints
assist judges and the police
all of this must be done for the problem to be resolved
Mauritania's judicial system has adequate legislature
there are sufficient law's
the problem is with their application
This ensemle of elements which can affect change
must be implicated in this struggle
which in reality is a
struggle for a united, modern, Mauritania
We can liberate and modernise it
only together
with the Mauritanian people
and with the help our international partners
