Hey guys! What's happening? James here with another video, this time we're looking at
Doctor Who! The last time I did a Doctor Who video was the 50th anniversary where we went to
London, to eXcel and joined in with the 50th celebrations. If you haven't seen that
then give it a view on the channel! This time, somebody asked me to have a look at
the Doctor Who figurine collection.
Now, the Doctor Who figurine collection is a partwork, published by
Eaglemoss, and every fortnight you get a magazine,
and a little Doctor Who cast figurine. Its a fortnightly partwork,
it started in August last year, is still going strong and they reckon they are going to make
around about eighty
of these figurines. Now, you can see a few of them behind me
We'll look at a few of them, we'll look at the special TARDIS
and also, I've got the unboxing of the
Emperor Dalek to come up. The first issue of the Doctor Who figurine collection came out
last august
and featured the current Doctor at the time, Matt Smith. There he is!
each figurine is a model of the character at a high point, or a pinnacle of the
character or a specific special moment. As you can see, Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor
is using the communicator as he did in 'The Pandorica Opens'.
There he is. You can see the detail on him, its really quite good.
He is pointing up to the sky, he's got his communicator with him, he's got his little
shoes on,
the roll up on the trousers, the braces on,
things like that. Now, the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, is not the only doctor to be made
or is going to be made; more on a short while,
for instance here is David Tennant with his trademark long coat
he's got his converse on. This one is the Tenth Doctor taken from 'The School Reunion'.
Overall, they are really good figures and quite a nice little collector's piece.
Of course this is Doctor Who and synonymous with Doctor Who is the Daleks! Dalek
lovers aren't going to be missing out either, there's plenty of Dalek things.
I'll tell you about the subscription models in a short while.
This is Davros! A good example of
the lovely detail that goes into these models, just look on his face, the little
wrinkles,
the third eye on the top, the metal bars around his head,
its quite detailed! The little control panel there,
really a lot of work goes into these things
and you can see the spine at the back, they're very well made and
I feel sorry for the people that paint them, getting into the little details on the
coat and things like that there.
They are made out of a kind of metallic resin casting, with a cast that is produced with the BBC
using all the kind of
archive stuff. The mask on Davros for instance
possibly went into making the mask on this, scaled-down in a
3D modelling environment, and then eventually going into the cast
So far it has mostly been modern 'Nu-Who' characters that have been made
probably fitting in with the demographic of the kind of
current situation with Doctor Who. Here is Ood Sigma for instance with his little ball
he's got his little glass there, he's from 'Planet of the Ood'
Don't fear though, lots of classic characters are going to come
and I've got a list of kind of the projections of when
they will come as well, which we'll talk about shortly.
Now you can see on here behind me I've got most of the collection so far
We've got things like the modern Ice Warrior, we've got a
Sontaran, we've got a Silurian
Weeping Angel, Silence, Rassilon
We've got the Cybus Cyberman Cyber Controller
There's a Supreme Dalek, a Bronze dalek and here is a special one. If you're
a subscriber in the UK,
and its slightly different if you're a subscriber in the US which I'll go over in a minute,
but UK subscribers can opt to pay an extra pound an issue
its normally £6.99 an issue but you can pay
an extra pound so £7.99 an issue and then you get to receive special Daleks
every ten issues. This is the first one of the 10
Its a supreme Dalek, as you can see from 'The Dalek's
Masterplan' as it says on the bottom. The Supreme Dalek, the black and white and blue
bobbly bits one. That came
after the tenth issue for subscribers who
have upgraded for that extra pound. Now in the US,
good news is that you get the Daleks free as subscribers
So you subscribe, you pay your money per
issue and you get them free. However,
US subscribers it doesn't look like you are going to get
the Emperor Dalek, which I'll look at again
shortly, I'm going to unbox that in a minute. So bad news there for US subscribers, you don't get
get the Emperor
Dalek, but you do get the special edition 'Rare' Daleks
and their special edition stand, for free as part of your subscription.
The publishers have also decided every so often to release 'Special' issues
so what these do is that is costs a little more but you get an oversized, bigger
model
of something special The first one they released
was this one the TARDIS. Quite a nice model this one, its chunky
it is quite heavy and solid, you can see all the way around there
as I say, it costs a little bit more
you get the oversized model and you get a bumper version of the magazine. We'll look at those shortly
I believe the next special edition in the UK is out at the end of
March
and it is going to be a Slitheen! So, look out for that one.
So here we are in the usual 'man cave' seat. Welcome to the man cave!
Before we open this big, foreboding box here, its huge
what I was going to do is have a quick look at the
magazines
themselves. I've got them all stored up in the binder, again subscribers
can choose to receive binders. They cost a little extra
As all thee things do. Here is the
collection so far. Its a nice little binder, you have the Doctor Who logo on the front,
as you open it up, I've got the series guide at the start. You can see
the kind of quality of the print and the publication,
the series guide here opens out and gives you a quick overview
of Doctor Who, as if you don't know what it is!
There's all the Doctors and whatever.
It tells you about your figurines
how they are made, the sculpting, etc. And then the magazines themselves
The first issue
I'll just have a quick look over that one
This one is obviously the Eleventh Doctor, it gives you a kind of lowdown on the
model, Matt Smith himself, it goes into
a close up of the model and how
how it is made. All the different parts of the model
you get to see the parts that make up the costume, etc. Its a nice little magazine
put together. It shows you the
scene that the model
has come from, 'The Pandorica Opens' in that particular episode.
You can look through, it gives you the kind of the alliances,
the enemies,
nice little features, it gives you a run down in every issue
of each year, so 1963 this time
The formation of Doctor Who, casting
William Hartnell, getting it on
screens, the cast revealed, etc.
What else happened in that year, so the first X-Men comic, 'From Russia with Love'
was released, etc, etc.
This one gives you a little look inside the TARDIS
inside the Time Vortex, the Chameleon Circuit, it tells you
all kinds of little things, gives you a little interview with Steven Moffatt and on the back
page it also tells you what the
next issue is going to be. Now this magazine is the one for the special, which was the
TARDIS that I showed you earlier. Its quite a nice magazine, it runs to
52 pages, its got a nice foil masthead, its perfect bound as you can
see. Its got a lot of information in this. The 52 pages is a big bonus,
as opposed to the
20 or so that you get in the normal magazine
each fortnight. This is kind of what I expected the
normal magazines to be, in my own head. I've never got artworks before
so this is kind of what I expected those
to be.
I was really impressed with this one. Lots and lots
of information and articles, a lot of
effort has obviously gone into making
the TARDIS special edition. Now, on the other hand the Rare Daleks that subscribers
get also get a little magazine themselves
however, it is tiny. Its kind of like a little
A5 pamphlet that runs to eight pages.
So this one is for the Supreme Dalek that I showed you earlier
its the same kind of information but
much more condensed in a very
tiny little magazine.
Kind of a disappointment. The biggest disappointment between the
Special and the Rare Dalek magazines
is that they don't fit into the binder that is made for
the collection, so they have to kind of sit behind or you have to find
your own way of fitting them in.
I'm really quite annoyed at that, but there's nothing I can really do about it!
So lets do the unboxing part. Now this box box arrived earlier, its huge
as you can see. Inside here what we should have is the latest
two issues of the magazine, the partwork
with the figures and also it should have
the Emperor Dalek. Now, the Emperor Dalek is a special free gift for UK subscribers
it is the big bell-shaped Dalek with the
little head on the top and you
can see the Dalek mutant inside it.
I've been looking forward to this, it looks fantastic in the pictures, lets see what it looks like
in reality and open the box! Here we go!
Yep, the first thing you see is
the models. What have we got? We have
taking a look, a Cyberman from 'Nightmare in Silver' so that is from the
latest series of Doctor Who. He has got the 'Iron Man' style
blue round chest bit. He is from issue
number 14 as you can see
you get the magazine
as well. It gives you a little run down, we're up
to 1970 in the historical
part, we have a look at companions
etc and then it tells us what else is
in the box, which is Omega! Now, Omega is the very first
Classic series figurine that we've got so far, other
than the rare supreme Dalek that subscribers got. Omega comes
from the Jon Pertwee era, he was in the tenth anniversary episode
'The Three Doctors' which got together the first three Doctors to fight the threat of Omega.
There's a few more classic ones coming up, including a special one in a fw issues time which I shall tell you about shortly
The magazine of course, here you go. All about Omega, the usual stuff.
In true russian doll style, inside the box is
another box. What I'll do is get that box out and be back with you... Jump cut! So here is the smaller box
that came in a bigger box! I've cut the sellotape so we can give it an open and see
exactly whats inside. Lets have a look at how
impressive it is. It looks big! Here we go, this is the first bit, its the Dalek head
and part of it is broken! So the little
ear lights is broken already!
I'll put them to one side so I don't lose them. Maybe they'll glue on or something. But the thing does look very nice, you've got the
eye stalk, the mutant inside, look at it that way
Here's the eye stalk, the head, the mutant inside and all the little stroppy bits
they are like springs. Now the main body of the piece. There you go
So have a loo at that!
Thats an impressive piece, its huge, lots of little
detail, even on the inside
The infamous Dalek bobbles on the side. It is quite
weighty! Here is the piece put together
It was quite easy to put together. The little head part just sits
in these notches here and you just curl up the little springy bits
and put them inside little holes on the inside
the just kind of rest in there. So there it is, thats what it looks like, the Emperor Dalek
looking all kind of great, seeing the little mutant inside
I really like that! I've been kind of lucky with these collections so far
in that what I look on the
Facebook page for Doctor Who figurines,
I've seen a lot of people comment there that they've received damaged pieces
which is kind of understandable, they do have lots of little fiddly bits like the
arms on the Daleks and the pointy finger on the Silent and things like that
so you can understand why people would get some broken ones in transit. I'm a little disappointed
with this one that it has come with the
light bits, the ear lights of the Dalek,
broken. It looks fairly difficult to put back in because there
is little bits of plastic still
attached in there. I guess they can be glued
or something, I'll have a look into that. What I'll try to do is get in touch with Eaglemoss who make
the collection and try and get them to see what they
can do for it, whether they can replace it or whatever, we'll see.
So, around about fifteen issues in but what about the future of the collection?
We already know that Eaglemoss who make it have already planned about
80 issues and 80 figurines, so there's plenty more to come
The next special is coming up at the end of March in the UK
and that is going to be a Slitheen, an oversized Slitheen. Still around about 3 or 4 inches high
it looks really nice, there's a picture of it on screen!
We already know form the Omega issue, the last issue so far,
that the next ones coming are going to be the Vashta Nerada
they look quite good with the little skulls inside the helmets. From 'The Silence in the Library'
of course,m but what about after that? Classic Doctor Who fans are in for a treat
with the seventeenth issue if all goes to plan because I understand that
one is going to be the Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker - the ever popular Tom Baker! A lot of people have been asking when their favourite
characters are coming up or whether the Twelfth Doctor
is going to come or whether the War Doctor is going to be
featured. Now, I have seen a list and it gives the order
of the issues and what might be in them. Its been accurate so far
it could change I guess but so far it has been
really good, and I can tell you some of them right now!
Of course with things the way they are now the one that people have been asking for the most
so far has been Peter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor, when will we see him?
I can tell you that it is planned in!
It looks
like it is going to be around about issue 27. So that will possibly tie in to
when the new series starts to air, series eight.
Before Capaldi though we'll get another modern Doctor
Chris Ecclestone, the Ninth Doctor, is set to be released
in issue 22. Taking a quick look at the list.. Other doctors to come...
We have the Fifth Doctor in issue 37, then the Third Doctor in issue
42. Then the Seventh
Doctor in issue 47, the First Doctor in issue
53, Second Doctor in issue
58, the Sixth Doctor issue 62
And the Eighth Doctor in issue
70. John Hurt will be making an appearance as well,
The War Doctor, the Other Doctor or the 'non-Doctor' as they called him on the list!
He looks to be coming out in
issue 32! So thats the video on the Doctor Who Figurine Collection
as has been requested
