Welcome to the Docpods Podiatrists Review and today we'll be talking about a pump bump,
a retrocalcaneal exostosis or a Haglund's deformity.
A Haglund's deformity is a small, and often painful, lump located on the posterior lateral
aspect of the calcaneus as you can see here on this image.
This lump grows in relation to the foot pronating placing excessive pressure on the lateral
aspect of the Achilles tendon and where it inserts into the calcaneus. This lump is then
further aggravated as the foot rolls in and rubs against the shoe during walking.
Let's take a look at what a typical foot looks like during walking with a retrocalcaneal
exostosis. At normal speed it's difficult to see any abnormal motions. However, when
the video is slowed down you can see that the heel rolls in relative to the lower limb.
This places excessive pressure where the Achilles inserts into the lateral aspect of the calcaneus.
This causes the lateral aspect of the calcaneus to hypertrophy and grow and become further
irritated by the footwear.
