welcome to Wacky Wednesday, where everyone has a chance to show off their
own car, and here's this week's winner, welcome to New York City land of
precarious driving, so people commonly ask me it's a classic Jaguar good idea
as a daily driver in New York City, now it's pretty narrow as a car so you get
around double parked cars pretty good, but it's 17 feet long man you can't
park this thing, not in New York City anyway, but you know what it's an awesome
car you know why, it's a Jaguar it's got a hood ornament that can bite you, that's
right the teeth are indeed sharp, so let's take it for a spin let's see how
this thing works out in New York City, now let's go for a ride
Man this thing is a blast to drive, it looks like a giant car but it actually handles
remarkably well, now I got the vanden plas Jaguar which is the one that has
the comfort suspension, now you need that in New York City it's got 16 inch wheels
which is the smallest wheel size biggest amount of rubber you can buy for any
Jaguar of this era, and man that makes a big difference on the New York City
potholes here, so I highly recommend if you buy a Jag by the vanden plas if
you're gonna buy the old models like mine which is an X 308, okay making a
u-turn with a 17 foot long car that's no easy task, oh man it's got like a 45
foot turning circle or something like that I don't know, it's pretty, you
can't make you can't pop by U in midtown Manhattan with this thing let's put
it that way, but it's fun to drive, that's the whole point it's beautiful
it's classic, it's just great man ain't no problem
with it and it's fast as heck too, zero to 60 for this two-ton land yacht is six
and a half seconds and they made of another version that had the
supercharged engine that was five and a half seconds, not bad for a car that's 15
years old, so I am by no means a small person and yet I can sit fully
comfortable in this car in the front and then get straight out into the back and
without moving the front seat up, fit with ample legroom check that out, how
many cars can do that I mean I'm a big guy and they even have tray tables, the
quantity of chrome on this car is quite unusual for this day and age, there's
chrome pretty much everywhere that they could find an excuse to put it, and it
looks fantastic, but they simply don't make it like this anymore
I mean this is something you can't get with a new car, one of the nice things
about this big Jaguar is it has a really loud horn, it's great for commanding
attention in New York City I got to say, there's the empire state building
one of the key characteristics of a car that you're going to use in a place like
New York City is that it has to absorb bumps and potholes really well, it also
has to take abuse really well, the body on the Jaguar is solid steel which makes
it a great car for New York City where people open their doors into you and
*** into you, if you care about door dings and things like that
New York City's probably not the best place for you, but a steel car is
definitely easy to repair than an aluminum one, it's stronger it'll
absorb door dings and bumps and and small bumper to bumper exchanges as we
call them in New York City, things that happen every day, the whole car is
completely covered in dings and stuff like that, that's okay that comes with
the territory of being in New York City and driving here, 465 miles of range and I've
just driven 30 miles since my last fuel fill-up, that's right this car will do
over 500 miles and that gauge is only counting the main fuel amount
of 18 gallons, there's an additional three gallons of reserve on top of that
so it's got a 21 gallon fuel tank in this Jaguar, that means I can drive
approximately 550 to 600 miles on unleaded fuel, that means I can go from
New York City way up into well into Canada without stopping for fuel even
once this is a Jaguar man, and this is the unleaded version, the diesel one will
do well over 700 miles and the guys on the TV show top gear
they even took that challenge and it worked just like a charm, this car will
go and go and go like the Energizer Bunny, the ride quality in a Jaguar is
second to none, it's absolutely fantastic, and in New York City where there's
potholes everywhere it's a beautiful thing to have, big tires big cushy
suspension, it's great, the feeling inside all the
real materials the leathers is real the wood is real, it makes it really
enjoyable here, it's a fun experience to drive in New York City in a big jag, so one
reason why this Jaguar is a particularly good car for a city car for New York
City, when you're here and you're in bumper-to-bumper traffic with an average
speed of about 12 miles per hour daily, it's nice to have a very comfortable
environment to be in, I'm six feet tall I fit in here beautifully, there's
plenty of room behind me in a back seat if they were passengers, I'm in my own
cocoon in the middle of the busiest city in the entire world, I mean this place is
great I love New York City, but having a nice cocooned car is just a blast I love
it,
this old Jaguar is 40 years of engineering built into one car, I mean
this car was introduced in the early 1960s and hasn't changed all that much
ever since, basically they gave it a new v8 engine back in the year 1997 and 98
and other than that, new interior refinements and things like
that it's the same car, it's a 45 50 year old engineering, which is great because
everything is refined and perfect you don't have the modern technologies, but
you do have something that works pretty much flawlessly and it's great for
getting around New York,
among the things that make this Jaguar fun, are these gold engraved lines in the
wood that's special for the vanden plas edition, and it makes it really a
luxurious feeling, the wood in this car is real it's even cut from
one giant tree apparently, that's why all the panels match in grain
they're also unique in that respect, every car has a unique wood grain to it
it's fun that way, so Jaguar reliability, is it reliable
this car is 15 years old with a hundred and forty three thousand miles on it and
honestly nothing goes wrong, nothing not real problems anyway, I mean you get the
rubber parts have worn out, I have to change like the suspension components
that dry rotted but other than that, the car is just perfect, there's no emergency, no dash
lights on nothing wrong with it, the thing just drives and it's got good
brakes too hold on I think I might need them, so can you get good fuel mileage in New
York City, from a two-ton car with a four liter v8, the short answer is no, my
average fuel consumption according to the car right now says eleven point five
miles per gallon, and that is because I have an average speed of twelve miles an
hour, that's right I average twelve miles per hour when I drive around New York
City all day long, that's pathetic I know however I've taken this car to Boston
where most of the ride we had a 65 mile per hour speed limit and the car got a
very impressive 28 miles per gallon, now 28 miles per gallon that's borderline
hybrid territory there I mean that's respectable, however I'm not getting that
it says right now 11.6 miles per gallon average mile
instant fuel zero since I'm standing still, average speed of 12 miles per hour but
no you don't get good gas mileage in a big car like this around New York City
where you're sitting in traffic, I mean look at this, look at this traffic man
this is just all day long like this this is everywhere you go this is
New York City, I love a Jaguar in New York City it's fantastic,
well that was this week's video and remember to have your car video
