A really important thing when you're walking in the mountains is to have the right footwear.
Particularly in winter, what you normally might walk with during the milder times of
the year are not going to be adequate.
It's important when you're walking on snow and ice to have something with stiff soles.
They give your foot a lot more rigidity, because you can often be walking on snow where you
have to kick steps into it, to give you give a stable platform. If you've got soft-soled
shoes they're not going to do the job for you and you'll get very bruised feet and possibly
destroy your boots as well.
So I've got on a pair of winter mountaineering boots. They're brand new and shiny for this
year! They've got very good grip as you can see. The good thing about about these boots
that as well as having a good stiff sole, they can fit a crampon on as well.
A crampon up somewhere like Helvellyn in winter needs to be a mountaineering crampon. I'm
seeing a lot more of what are really crampons designed for coping with ice on pavements.
When you're buying crampons for your boots you have to make sure they are the proper
crampons for getting you up steep and technical ground.
