Peaceful Playgrounds on Wink News on School Recess Program
Anchor: Well, bullying is down at one Collier elementary school, and the reason behind it
may surprise you. School administrators claim it's because of the design of the new playground.
Education reporter Melissa McGrowley shows us what it's all about.
Reporter: When you think of a playground, this is probably what you'd expect, but here
at Osceola Elementary, this is where kids prefer to play. It's called a Peaceful Playground,
and like its name implies, third grader Samantha R. and her classmates play more than fifty
games together.
Samantha: My favorite game is Four Square, over there.
Reporter: Before this new design...
Student: We used to argue a lot.
Reporter: But now...
Student: We don't argue to get in line, and who's cutting and who's not cutting.
Reporter: A study found that colorful playground markings and organized games decrease bullying,
fighting, and injuries, because every game has rules children can follow, and ways to
resolve conflict.
Omar: When we're playing basketball and someone thinks we fouled someone, we do rock, paper,
scissors to see who won.
Reporter: Administrators say, just a few weeks into the school year and they already see
a big difference.
Tamie: When you come out, all the kids are just engaged and doing exactly what they're
supposed to be doing, and having fun.
Reporter: In North Naples, Melissa McGrowley, WINK News.
Anchor: Osceola Elementary is the first school in the district to have a Peaceful Playground.
