Hi!
Today we continue with Illustrator tools
Today with type tools
You can type whatever you want
in every part of the sheet
We can see these examples
There are 3 kind of type
Point type
the most used
Then there's area type
with you can type following the boundaries
Finally there's type on a path
which follows every kind of path
To create a point type
Just click on type tool ("T" key)
with a click we define the place of the type
you can write here fast and easy
Area type follows the boundaries of the object
like a rectangle
Click on type tool but now drag the mouse
you will see a boundary box
If you continue to type
you will see a red plus
that signals other text
Boundary box can have every kind of shape
so you can also write inside every kind of object
For instance you can write inside ellipse or circle
Select area type tool
and click inside the circle
Last kind of type is type on a path
This follows the boundary lines of an object
For instance you can write a text on the boundary lines of a star
Just draw a star
select type on a path tool
and click on the star's path
When text does not fill the entire path
you can move text in the path
To do that click on the little white square
and drag as always
There are vertical type tools too
So there are vertical point type
vertical area type and vertical type on a path tool
You can select them click on type tool
They work as other ones
but you will get a vertical text
You can also transform objects with text
You can edit the star
with direct selection tool
Text will fit in the new shape
You can also resize
as explained in the video about transformation and reshaping tools
Texts are really powerful in a illustration
in fact you can find other options on text menu
and also in the control panel above
Let's start with control panel
When you select a generic text
in the control panel you will see
the name of the object: in this case a text
To the right you will see stroke and fill color
options that edit the path
The most important is font
if you click on font you will see
font, font size, kerning, language and others
like scale, leading, tracking
So you can edit every single aspect of the font
Then on the right
we can see paragraph with you can edit the position of text
You can also transform texts
with envelops
You will see a window
to distort the text as you want
If you want
you can create an envelope with meshes
just move the mesh points to edit and to distort the text
More on the right you will see opacity, really useful
Last there are a tool to manage colors
other to align texts and create texts for Adobe Flash
With transform you can resize the text selection
Lots of these options
can also found on the right panel
Here you have
colors, brushes, path options and others
When you create a text keep an eye on the text menu too
This menu can make fast some customizations
You can preview fonts
and see an history of fonts previously used
Then edit text size
Show glyphs and symbols
You can add columns and row in area type
You can find type on a path options
You can add some effects in this case
You can unify texts
Fit headline, threading texts
and create outlines
Create outlines can distort text
You can width, twirl, bloat, pucker
as explained in the other videos
There is also another tool really useful
When there are too much texts
It is Find Font
You can find all the texts around the work sheet
You can change fonts in this windows faster
When you finish just click on done
There is also the possibility to change text
in capital letters selecting All caps from the character menu
Then there is smart punctuation
with you can change normal punctuation
Last you can align margins
Show hidden objects that will not be printed
And a tool that can edit text from horizontal to vertical
and viceversa
Last there is legacy text
that are texts not created in Illustrator CS5 but in previous versions
A final tip: you can erase all little useless empty objects
maybe created by mistake
Select object menu, path and clean
