Well, hi everybody, and welcome to Moodle Support Theater. We're going to look
now at a series I call "What's New in Moodle."
To do that, let's log into Moodle, and at the bottom of the listing of all of our
courses, we're going to see course categories.
One of those courses is
Moodle support, so let's give that a click, and what I want to show you
the three formats we have in Moodle. We've actually streamlined some of the
outdated, unused, and incompatible layouts -
they were draining resources took up a space, and, quite honestly nobody's using the
darn things anyway.
So we've been
creating most of our videos in the Weekly Format. So let's find Weekly
Format on our list of courses,
give it a the click. I'm guessing that looks pretty darn familiar.
Now, in breaking with tradition, we're going to come up and use that back arrow
and get back to our menu, and
very close to Weekly Format, we're going to see Topic Format. Let's give that a
click.
That's fairly familiar - we've used that many times in the past and I want to
remind you, when we come up here and turn editing on at the upper right-hand
corner,
notice
all the things the changes in the center
column -
Add a Resource, Add an Activity icons after the news forum.
Let's turn our editing off,
Let's come to the upper
lefthand corner and use our back arrow.
Back arrow...
Back arrowÉ and there we are! Let's come up a little bit uh... Social Format.
Totally different.
The Social Format is primarily a big forum. Notice you can have text,
illustrations, and video combined in a sample box. As we scroll down, we can have
simply text, or as we scroll down a little more,
text and an illustration. We also notice that this could get very big very
quickly and here's the most important thing I want to point out to you.
Come up here and turn your editing on and watch what happens in the center
column. Click it...
No, I don't see anything different either.
You still have the functionality in the left-hand and the right-hand column as
far as adding a block by using the dropdown. As far as moving a block, if you
decide, for example
you want the activities block in the left-hand column to be under
Administration, you can simply use the arrows and move it down where you want it,
but there are no assignments created here. There are no uploading of files
created here, so this is a very limited use format.
We had it before,
it's been cleaned up, it's been modified
but that's basically what it does - it allows you to have a very unique
discussion.
Now, let's come down
to the Test of New Posts - it's below the large Moodle demonstration.
Notice it indicates who has been editing the content
and the time.
This is an excellent way to track participation.
So,
this is the Social Format. I wanted you to know we have it, and, if it's something
you think that's going to fit your class purpose, for heaven's sakes
feel free to try it.
You'll find these formats when we go to the Settings
in our Administration column in the left-hand side.
Select Settings,
scroll down a bit, and under the summary box, your first choice is Format.
Use the dropdown and there they are - Social,
Topics and Weekly,
and if you click away, you notice that you can also choose the number of weeks or
topics that you would like to use.
There is no choice for the Social Format.
I'm going to come to the bottom of the page. I'm not making any changes. I'm
going to choose cancel. I'm going to turn my editing off,
and we'll be back with more of What's New in Moodle in our next video
presentation.
Between now and then, come to the source for Moodle help -
give us a call at x3633. We look forward to speaking with you.
