Swimmer unites the five continents. Dominican long distance ocean swimmer Marco Diaz has
successfully completed the last stretch necessary to symbolically unite all five continents,
a feat he undertook as part of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Campaign.
On Sunday, August 30, the 35-year-old athlete crossed the icy waters of the Bering Strait,
from Big Diomede Island in Russia, to Little Diomede in the territory of Alaska, USA. Prior
swims included the bridging of Oceania with Asia by crossing from Papua New Guinea to
Thailand; joining Asia to Africa in a swim from Jordan to Egypt, and connecting Africa
to Europe by traversing the waters between Morocco and Spain. A ceremony of welcome for
Mr. Diaz from United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled for September.
Our heartfelt congratulations, Marco Diaz for your notable accomplishment! Blessed be
such an achievement in inspiring us all toward efforts to build a global community across
countries and continents worldwide
