I just came out of the committee hearing on the House Bill that's going to create
child neglect as a criminal punishment in Maryland. We're the only State, among
the 50 states that don't do that. There are a number of cases in Maryland every year
where the maltreatment of children is so heinous that prosecutors ought to have the
tools to be able to punish those adults who neglect those children. We're not trying to punish
parents who don't have the financial means or homeless parents who can't provide for
their children, but there are some parents in the State of Maryland, a small group that
they may be, that ought to face the criminal justice system when they intentionally fail
to provide for their children. So, we just left the hearing in the House Judiciary Committee
and we're urging the committee and the entire House of Delegates to vote favorably on this bill.
