I'm here at Congressman Richard Hanna's Jobs Fair and Resume Workshop
in the Alumni College Center on the Utica Campus of Mohawk Valley Community College.
These are tough financial times we are living in right now. Overall in the United States, unemployment remains stubborn at 9.1 percent,
with 14 million people without jobs.
The economy is struggling to get back on its feet, and many Americans are struggling to put food on the table,
let alone fund an education or find a well-paying job.
MVCC is here to help, and one of the ways we are doing so
is to partner with Congressman Hanna to sponsor this Jobs Fair and Resume Workshop,
which will give our community the chance to discover new opportunities and career options right here in the Mohawk Valley.
One of the things that's really obvious is that people are coming back to school,
and they're coming back to places like MVCC,
community colleges, to get training for jobs that may or may not be out there, but might be out there,
for people who need to redirect their lives.
Most people will change the direction of their work experience and jobs six, eight, ten times now
It used to be you'd do it once or twice in your life,
so places like this are more important than ever.
They provide the education that allows people to advance themselves, and stay busy in their life, make a living.
Well, being a student it is hard to find a job,
so you come to the job fair to try to find a job here,
in something I like to do. I'm a nursing student, want to switch my major back basically to nursing,
so, become a nursing student, and helping people is something I like,
and they're here to help us. It definitely works, both ways.
So the job fair is a good thing, and we should definitely see more of them
throughout this semester and next semester.
MVCC is also ready to help with job and career services and resume building.
Our Office of Career, Transfer and Job Placement Services is dedicated to helping
students discover their career and educational goals.
Some of the services this office provides are workshops focused on resume-development and interview skills,
counseling and advisement on career and placement opportunities,
and other tools to help plan an education and a career.
We hear from employers on a daily basis regarding job vacancies
and wonderful opportunities for our students here at the college,
but we also hear from students that there aren't jobs and they can't find these opportunities.
You know, a couple ways we try to close that gap is by offering job fairs on campus,
and also offering students to come down to Career Services Office and get that help.
We offer resume development, cover letter development,
also interview preparation and connecting students with employers through our job search database
I think all of these things help students, and it's really a beneficial situation for everyone,
not only the employer, but the student, as well as the community college as a whole.
The Jobs Fair and Resume Workshop is just one way that MVCC
is partnering with leaders on a local and national level
to bring new opportunities to the thousands of people
who call the Mohawk Valley home.
Be sure to visit us at mvcc.edu to find out about all of the services we have to offer.
I hope you found some insight and inspiration here today.
Thanks so much for watching.
