With the start of the new year... many of you may now be looking at your New Year's
resolutions. But quite soon... eyes will be on whether
President-elect Park Geun-hye can fulfill her campaign pledges.
Our Eoh Jin-joo refreshes our memories on Park's policy goals around "national integration."(Korean)
"I'll break the vicious cycle of extreme division and conflict that has dominated the country
over the past half decade through reconciliation and fair appointments."
One of the most important first steps for integration,... would be making sure her appointments
to key government posts are made regardless of the person's background.
How strong her commitment to integration really is will be reflected in the appointments she
makes to her presidential transition team. If we take a look at the appointments that
she's already made,... we can see that the president-elect has named quite a number of
people who are either from Jeolla Province or who have some kind of connection to that
region. Jeolla Province is the traditional stronghold
of the liberal parties,... so these appointments could be viewed as an indication of her desire
to work across party lines. President-elect Park has also vowed to meet
with leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties to lay out the big picture for a new
Korea. And on the last day of 2012,... Park made
another pledge.
(Korean) "I will become a president that respects the
National Assembly so that the ruling and opposition parties can work together to open a new era."
Many political pundits have suggested that President-elect Park may need to change her
leadership style though. Park is not known as being a great communicator,
and in the past, she's handled things by consulting ONLY with her very close aides.
So, experts say she will have to hone her communication skills,... especially now at
a time when the ruling and opposition parties are so deeply divided.
