The programme ends with a Farming Challenge and this is based on critical skills. Critical
skills partly uses the idea of authentic challenges for pupils to complete and in the case of
the Farming Challenge this presents pupils with a particular scenario. The scenario as
it's said on this card is that a group of tourists are coming to Scotland and they want
to learn about farming in the past. They're going to visit a farming museum but before
they visit the museum they would like a leaflet that describes how the land was farmed. So
the challenge for pupils is to produce a leaflet showing farming in the past. and the leaflet
has to be produced in English and if possible in one other foreign language, The challenge
outlines criteria for the product so it must be an A4 sheet of paper folded in half, it
must be clearly laid out, it must include images. These images come from the CDrom because
it's possible to download all the images that are on the CDrom into whatever format is desired,
Word etc. but also one other image must come from the SCRAN website and there's a hyperlink
into that website. In addition to designing the leaflet pupils must also complete an evaluation
form, someone from say a local museum to use when judging the leaflets. for that a template's
provided outlining the key criteria of a clear and effective leaflet under which pupils must
add their own points so for example under the heading 'Text' [The text must be easy
to read] so pupils can add 2 or 3 other points there for example it must be well laid out
and then under 'Images' the first criteria there is [Images linked to the text] so another
point might be that the images must show range of work done in farms. The point of designing
this evaluation sheet is to build assessment into the challenge. It's more effective once
the leaflets are produced if they can be judged by someone with say relevant experience so
it might be someone from a local museum, it might also be someone from a local library
or perhaps even a local farmer because some schools have used the programme and have invited
local farmers into speak to pupils which provides a nice example of oral history and involving
the community in a project
