Five people were sent to the hospital with injuries after an accident on a ride at the
North Carolina State Fair Thursday night.
A spokesperson for the fair told CNN the passengers were hurt when a ride called the "Vortex"
suddenly started up again as they were trying to get off. (Via WTSP)
"It just sounded like a bunch of stuff hitting metal. That was it. Then, all of a sudden,
we had the ambulance and state trooper activity after that." (Via WFLA)
The victims reportedly range in age from 14 to 39. The Wake County sheriff told reporters
two people were receiving treatment for serious injuries.

This particular ride will reportedly undergo an inspection to determine the cause of the

The sheriff's office said it will be conducting its own investigation into the incident as
well. (Via WSOC)
"We have about 35, 40 people that our investigators and officers are talking to at this time that
may have witnessed it or may have seen something that would help us." (Via WIS-TV)
The accident took place just before the fair was about to close for the night. But despite
all the chaos, the fair will reopen Friday as scheduled. It's unclear if the Vortex will
reopen again as well.
