Learning for Tomorrow is a really big initiative for Curtin
and we've got an exciting project called Transforming Learning at
Curtin and and it goes across curriculum, but it also goes across transforming
the student experience. My name's Associate Professor Sonia Dickinson,
I'm an academic in the School of Marketing, Curtin Business School.
I've been teaching at Curtin for ten years now and obviously across that time
what we've been able to do in that classroom has transitioned.
You know years ago it used to be overhead projectors. I can still remember
taking photocopies of everything along and using overhead projectors.
But obviously where I'm at now in teaching in a collaborative learning
space is certainly the best facility that I've been in.
The expectation is for when our graduates leave to have that ability to
function within a digital space and be able to access content, to be able to create
content.
The technology allows them to achieve
what they're able to achieve in a real work situation when it comes to profiling
and thinking about an audience.
Technology will play a very big part. Already
we're equipping our classrooms for the future. So we've
refurbished 11 new learning spaces
this year into collaborative learning spaces
but we're also in the planning process looking at another 25 to 30 spaces
being refurbished for next year.
I also get them to be create through an I-movie ap
a type of communication appeal. So rather than read about what an appeal is they actually
create it and I can see just how easily they are able to communicate with a client by piecing
together
some visual content in a movie format. for me its a positive experience
because I see student involvement. I've surveyed students
regarding their levels of engagement and it's incredibly strong.
They like it, tehy enjoy it, it's something different. There's active learning occuring.
Being able to up access content, carry out activities doesn't necessarily
just have to even be confined to a classroom. I think there's a lot we can do with
the surrounds on this Campus
and getting students engaged. So for new teaching staff at Curtin, the first step
would be to
attend our Foundations of Learning and Teaching workshops. After that
we would be and offering a collaborative learning workshop so you could actually
come and engage
in a I guess I modeled approach to collaborative learning where
we show you how you would develop your curriculum to engage students
and then we would actively model that within a classroom with the technology
that's in the classroom. If we don't embrace the technology, if we don't find
new and innovative ways of delivering what we do,
it may well be that we'll become irrelevant.
We have no intention of being irrelevant at Curtin so it's about moving forward and
it is about Learning for Tomorrow!
