It's the organic and trance music side
that we can find with jazz.
I started the "Rachel Therrien Quintet" in 2009
when I came back form my studies in Cuba.
Trough a concert presenting "jazz" in it's philosophic meaning,
we can really get to the heart of our audience.
I chose my musicians for the beautiful connexion we have together,
and our real capacity to interact trough music and improvisation.
When I do "pa-da-pap", well.. the drums respond's "pa-da-pap"..
"laugh"
Simon Page made me rediscover the electric bass.
First, I chose him because he plays both upright and electric bass,
but more it goes, most of the concerts are featuring the electric.
Before playing with Simon, I had a big preference for the upright bass. Now it's different.
I chose Alain Bourgeois because I can have a real connexion with him and his drums.
Because my compositions are mainly based over rhythmic concepts,
I really needed someone like him who can understand exactly were I'm going with my compositions.
Charles Trudel,
I'm in love with is piano playing.
For me, he is one of the most creative piano player I know in Montreal.
It's for that I chose him and also because we know each other since year's already.
We work together since a long time and we have a great chemical connexion.
Every time I bring a new composition, he takes it and bring's it totally somewhere else.
I would not imagine my band without my dear Charles Trudel!
I have for compositions for quartet and also for quintet.
I love to play with a saxophone player. I give's a presence and there are many of my compositions
that are written and worked in counterpoint with the saxophone.
I think it bring's a lot to my music!
I work with Sebastien Fortin, a friend I met trough University.
What I like with him is our capacity to blend our sounds together very fast,
even after month's without playing together, we get along and "fooo" it sound's like a brick wall.
What I like is fusion, I try to recycle different styles.
I will for example mix something swing with some afro-cuban percussion;
or I would take a classical piece and re-arrange it in salsa or danzón.
Even something "funk" that I will bring with more complex rhythmical ideas,
trying to reach those "trance" aspects and create something new trough my music.
