Sound and Strings. Gabriela Vermelho.
good afternoon to you all
I hope you're having a great time
it looks like you're full after lunch and satisfied
you heard many nice lectures here
so I hope I'll make you feel happy with my music
and as I noticed the audience here is international
that you come from many places
I started with Portugal
and lyrics by Fernando Pessoa
and now I'm going to jump here
to the nearby county
and I'm going to play you a Moravian-Slovak ballad
I'm thinking which one, because I know a lot of them
it's always like that
when I'm under pressure and want to say everything in fifteen minutes
I prepare it
and then I forget it
so I'm going to play a different one
I wanted to play something....
about a girl
who was always a girl and then she became a mother out of the blue
and she didn't even know how
and now I'm going to play something like...
something full of changes
about a girl who had many children
and you'll hear how it ends
I also make music for theaters
and recently I finished music for a ballet for the theatre in Pilsen
"Bloody Wedding"
and I'd like to play you some of it
because the things I prepared for you afterwards
will be connected to this
everyone here has these nametags
I also have one
there is something written on it
we'll get to that
so I'll play a part of it
"Bloody Wedding" sounds quite crazy
it is a crazy story, many of you surely know it
a story by Federico Garcia Lorca, a Spanish writer
and what I chose to play here is a kind of a lullaby
so a bit calmer and not that bloody
so I'll play it for you
when I was talking about this event with one of the organisers
he asked me to tell you and show you how a song is created
it is really difficult, because this ballet, for example
took me half a year
so we'd be sitting here for half a year
and it still wouldn't be done
so, I only wanted to prove to you
lyrics inspire me a lot
and I think it is possible to set any text to music
like the one you heard just now, the Spanish one
so I'm going to show you
that I'm capable to set your nametags to music, what's written on them
so
hello sir
this will be difficult
don't laught, now I can't read it
do you speak Czech?
but you spoke in English before
I was looking forward to singing in English
that'd be so embarassing
I like this lady in the polka dot blouse, I'm going to check her out
your name is similar to my friend's
he's a cellist
his name is Jan Kavan
so this lady's name is Lucie Kavanová
I have a special role for you, if you like it
so now is the right moment to reveal what is on my nametag
well, I thought I have it there as well
but I'd put it there, the inspiration
so I'm going to ask you
do you like singing?
do you like recitation?
but you like smiling
ok so I'm not going to torture you anymore
do you want me to torture you?
is there any volunteer to be tortured?
don't be afraid
but wait a moment
what are you doing here?
but you're the organiser, aren't you?
that's not fair
it has to be some visitor
ok then
but this is in a foreign language
word, music, great! story, silence, you're my type of person!
I'll give this to you and I'll continue playing
and you'll make up a short song or a poem about me
