Disney, december 1955, room temperature. The *** is happily watching his puppies gathered
around the Christmas tree.
The little ones are rolling over the carpet, close to their caring mother. Happy end.
Turda, January 2013, 8 degrees below zero.
The ***, named Lord, has neither puppies, nor a Christmas tree.
He has nothing but a dog house. For him that is enough, he is big and strong,
but some of his friends are in need. They are cold, they are hungry and they want a home.
Nita has puppies, four boys, but she is very
weak and can't lactate. She awaits patiently for the ladies from the
dog shelter to come and feed her puppies. When we filmed her, she was looking at
us while taking a peek at her puppies, fearing that someone could take them away from her.
She didn't know that this could be their only chance.
Happy end? Hard to believe.
At "Trei Frati Patati" dog shelter
Christmas is long gone. So is the dry food.
The dogs are being fed with a mixture of flour and bacon skin which freezes during winter,
making it hard to be managed and given to the 140 stray dogs collected from the streets.
Or 150.
Or 160.
Mrs. Eva Pop has already lost their number.
Every week she counts more and more.
Some "good samaritans" throw new born puppies over the shelter's fence.
It is for their best, rather than kill them, you might say.
But at Trei Frati Patati there is no more
room for other stray dogs. The enclosures are already crowded, the staff
is insufficient, the debt to the vet is already substantial, 2000 lei (~460 euros), and the
food is consumed in an alarming amount: 80 kilos daily, two tons and a half monthly.
What do you need, we asked, in order for the shelter to continue its activity?
We need food, we need wood for the dog houses, we need money for sterilization and medicines,
but MOSTLY we need people to make some courage and come pick out a dog.
Him. Or him. Or him. Or these little ones.
She is Phoebe. She used to live in Turda's dog shelter.
Dumped over the fence (which apparently became
the favourite sport for people who imitate dog loving)
she fell right into a dye bucket.
She has been saved just in time and in a few days she had the chance to find an owner.
Six months later, finding herself in Andrada and Tino's home, Phoebe is a princess with shiny
fur, and her two owners are happy they've chosen her. Andrada doesn't go to the shelter
anymore because she knows that she would be coming back with other dogs in her arms, which
she could not keep due to her limited home space, but she persuades all her friends to
visit "Trei Frați Pătați" dog shelter. Once there, it's impossible not to
fall in love with the poor tramps and not take back home at least one of them.
Calu is three years old and he's been poisoned twice during his first year of life.
He got away alive even if nobody gave him
another chance when he got poisoned the second time.
Slowly he got well but he still has problems
with his backbone. He is quite fearful and he would never get far from Anca, his „mother",
when they go out for a walk. Calu now lives with his owners and two other
dogs: Hor and Mathilda.
Matilda is now four years old.
When she was just a puppy she was adopted by a lady who chained her.
Back then, Nuca Organization, which gave her for adoption, took her back. Thereby she now
lives with Florin and Anca, along with her brothers.
Monique takes care of twelve dogs. She is the vicepresident of Nuca, the non-profit
organization specialized in animal adoption. Not all 12 dogs are hers, some just wait to
be adopted. Some lucky few, taken from the streets, are part of the family.
Each dog has its story. Some have been hit by cars, they've lost limbs or they continue
to have serious problems, others have been
abandoned on the side of the road or at the garbage dump.
Some are too fearfull, some too noisy, but,
regardless of their temper, all of them receive their vaccines in time, they are well fed
and their fate is closely monitored after they've been adopted.
The organization does not allow for an adopted dog to be kept in chain or to be treated unwell.
Last year Nuca has succeded to give for adoption over 300 dogs, but the number of dogs who
need an owner, treatments and care is much larger.
Go to the dog shelters in your city. Deliver those dogs food. There are high chances to
meet there your next future best friend. If you can't adopt a dog, you most certainly
know someone who can. Let's make their life better!
