Safety is YOUR Responsibility!
Hello, we are from Mains'l Services,
7th Street Centre for the Arts.
And we are here to discuss pedestrian safety.
When you are out in the community
it is important to be aware of your environment.
Whether you are walking with friends to the store
or with a staff member to go on an errand,
Safety is YOUR responsibility!
It is up to you to keep yourself safe,
by saying Stop! Look! Listen! And Walk!
We encounter different types of crosswalks every day.
Walk with us and lets demonstrate good safety techniques.
Always Cross at a corner, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
STOP: Before you cross the street,
STOP! Wait for the for all cars to pass.
LOOK & LISTEN: Look to your left, right, and left again when crossing the street,
and keep looking as you cross. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
Listen for cars that are turning or backing up.
WALK: Walk, do not run, across the street. Obey all traffic signals.
Always use a sidewalk,
if you walk in the road you are in the Cars territory.
Michelle demonstrates crossing at a Yield intersection.
An intersection is where two different roads cross each other.
When you do need to cross, stop at the end of the curb.
Look! Left, right and left again. If there are parked cars present,
it can be difficult to see around the vehicle.
Check to make sure they are not about to move.
Is the engine running? Is there a driver inside?
It can be frustrating, lets show you how to get around that.
See how Michelle points to the edge of the curb then to the edge of the parked car.
Proceed past the parked vehicle and stop again.
Look left, right, and left again to make sure there are no cars or bikes approaching.
James is fast and we did not see him coming because the van was in our way.
Now that the bike has safely passed, Look left, right, and left again.
If you do not see anything approaching, safely walk across the road, do not run, continuing to Look for oncoming vehicles.
When we break for lunch, we must cross several streets to get to our favorite restaurants.
This intersection is a 4-way stop.
At this busier intersection, Drivers are supposed to stop when they approach the intersection.
Since crossing here can be busy, lets talk about distractions.
Listening to your MP3 player while crossing is not a safe habit.
Its important to keep each other safe.
Cell phones are important to have with you while out in the community,
but texting and walking are a bad combination.
Please put these items away.
Now, we can focus on Stop! Look! Listen! and Walk!
At the end of our day, its time to hop on a bus to head home.
These friends are about to cross a busy street equipped with a Crosswalk Signal.
JJ has located the correct button with an arrow showing what direction he would like to cross.
Be ready to cross when the Signal changes from Dont Walk, to Walk,
Remember to Stop! Look! Listen! and Walk!
Watch the traffic to make sure that the cars have stopped before the crosswalk.
Cars could be turning across the crosswalk, or running a red light.
Never enter a crosswalk when the "Don't Walk" sign is flashing.
It is OK to wait for the next one.
Thanks for Walking with us. Remember: Stop! Look! Listen! and Walk!
