Spring Branch
Spring Branch is a suburb of Houston in Harris County, Texas. In 2008, the community showed
a significant immigration of Korean American and Hispanic American communities.
In 1830, the area was begun as a religious German farmer settlement. Karl Kolbe, one
of the earliest settlers, opened sawmills to cut area timber. In the mid-1950's efforts
to create a Spring Branch municipality failed, creating the Memorial villages, a group of
six independent municipalities. In the mid-to-late 20th century, the area had a rural suburban
character with dirt roads and horses in the area.
In the 1970s, apartment complexes began to open leading to the City of Houston Housing
Authority in 1982 to propose a $3.8 million public housing unit. The city received a great
deal of opposition from civic clubs, city council members, and state representatives
so the project was eventually cancelled.
Between the 1980 and 1990 Census, many Hispanics settled in the area from Central American
countries. The Hispanic population alone increased by an amount between 1,000 to 3,500 per square
mile. By 2007, many older homes were torn down in the area making room for new homes,
new homeowners, and larger lots. New residents came due to the proximity to Downtown, Uptown,
and the Energy Corridor. If you are looking for a change to a multi-cultural
community conveniently located to the major areas of Houston then Spring Branch is the
community you are looking for.
