I am presenting my research today at the Haskell symposium. I'll be showing a bit of the work that I've done with the database.
Just one small question, and there are a lot of questions that can be asked, but I took one small component: I looked at the distribution of medicinal plants in Kansas
to see if those are any different than the distribution of medicinal plants in North America.
I prepared today by looking at background primary literature searches to see what has been done in the past with looking at ethnobotanical databases.
In doing that, I found a study looking at North American medicinal databases housed in Michigan done by Dr. Moerman.
And essentially thought I could mimic his study by doing it in Kansas, restricting the area. My results lined up very nicely with his
with the exception of the Fabaceae family, which is the bean family. It seems that Kansas hosts more medicinal species within that family than the rest of North America.
I'm not so much nervous about presenting because I really enjoyed my research and it’s lead me into a lot of different areas
and there's a lot more questions that I can ask. It’s been sort of one step into how do I look into a database and what kind of questions can I ask?
Then coming to a place where I get some results and then having someone else in the field who has done that,
being able to compare that. It was really interesting experience and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
