This really is
a watershed car for BMW and it's one which could have the BMW fanboys up in arms! That's
because it's the first BMW badged car to be front wheel drive! Now while it's called the
2 Series Active tourer it's not based on the 2 Series platform but a stretched version
of the new MINI platform and will rival the Mercedes B Class. This car is all about practicality and if
you want you can slide the rear seats forwards for more boot space -- though even then it's
not quite as big as a Mercedes B-Clas's boot - or backwards for more leg room. You can
also fold down the front passenger seat if you need to carry longer items.
Mat in the front saying stuff about the design and options include lower M Sport suspension
and active dampers. There's a range of hi-tech features and options, too, like a head-up
display and a Traffic Jam Assistant, which can steer, accelerate and brake for you in
traffic up to 40mph. In terms of engines you can get the 1.5-litre
3cylinder turbo petrol from the MINI or a 228bhp 2.0-litre turbo in the 225i. There
will be diesel versions too -- the 218d being capable of 68.9mpg which is the most economical
model in the BMW line up. There will also be an all-wheel drive X-drive version too
for those who just can't handle the fact of owening a front wheel drive BMW.
