Hello Today we be focusing on the Common Core State
Standard Gaining Familiarity with Factors and Multiples
I want you to take a moment to think back Do you recall how you learned about prime
numbers, factors, or multiples? The Common Core State Standards are focused
on making numbers more concrete for students. One way that we can meet this standard is
through the use of pony beads and pipe cleaners You can have your students make these very
easily in your own classroom. This is a demonstration of how you can use
pipe cleaners and pony beads in your own classroom to teach about factors.
Today I’m working with factors of 30 Now, once you have your students make this
they can also create larger ones by attaching more beads
and more pipe cleaners together or smaller ones as you want them to learn.
Now, with the factors of 30, it becomes evident to students that 5 is a factor of 30 because
I have 5 sections Also, they can see that 6 is a factor of 30
because there are 6 equal groups in each section The students can also move each of the section
beads around to decide if there are equal groups
Now, here if I move each of these sections into 3’s I begin to see that 3 is also a
factor of 30 Using this method the students will begin
to develop a more concrete understanding of what a factor really is
Another way that we can use them is to teach about prime and composite numbers
Ask your student to put one pony bead on the pipe cleaner
And they can see that it doesn’t divide by anything but one which is itself
Now a prime number is a number that only divides by one and itself
Ask your students then to slide one more pony bead onto the pipe cleaner
Now there are two pony beads on the pipe cleaner, two can only divide by itself and one, it
must be a prime number Ask your students to add another pony bead
to the pipe cleaner, and they can see that it can only divide by itself and one
If the students slide one more pony bead onto the pipe cleaner, this is different
This can also divide into two equal groups, this must be a composite number
Using the pony beads and pipe cleaners will really give your students a concrete understanding
of what prime numbers and composite numbers really are
Thank you for joining me to learn a little bit more about how to make numbers more concrete
to our 4th grade students With Common Core State Standard 4OA.B.4.
Thank you!
