Musical Ornaments
The next two rudiments have musical ornaments.
I´ll use another instrument to explain this.
I confess that i haven´t played the piano for a long time,
but let´s do it to explain the musical ornaments.
As the name says, ornament is an adornment,
I use it to embellish a central note.
For example: On the piano you can make a Trill.
I´ll play a simple melody.
Now I'll play a Trill on the first note.
There is also Apoggiatura.
I´ll play another melody, without ornaments.
Now with some Apoggiaturas.
So, musical ornaments are used to embellish, adorn a central note.
Let´s see it on the drums!
After the explanation "A la Simpsons",
I´ll give an example on the drums.
I´ll play a rhythm with single notes,
then I´ll put some ornaments
like flam and drag to embellish the rhythm.
Ok? Let´s go to the next rudiments: Flam and Drag.
6. Flam
Our sixth rudiment is the Flam.
In this rudiment there´s a central note,
and before I play this note, there´s another one
that is played very close to the central note,
giving the Flam effect.
First I´ll play only the central note, and then I´ll add the grace note.
Ok?
The right Flam is the one where the right hand plays the central note.
I think so, but there are people who think it´s the other way round.
Anyway, this is my right Flam,
central note played with my right hand
and the grace note with my left one.
The left Flam is the opposite.
You can also practice alternating.
7. Drag
And the seventh and last rudiment is the Drag.
Like the Flam there´s a central note
and before that there are two grace notes.
Demonstrating.
The notes are played close to each other.
You must not do it this way
Ok?
Play the notes close.
Like the Flam, I call this the right hand Drag,
where the central note is played with the right hand,
and the two grace notes with the left one.
Let´s see the right Drag.
The left Drag.
You can alternate as well.
Ok?
Well, this was the 7 Essential Rudiments Lesson.
I´ll post two more videos about this subject.
On the next video some exercises
for endurance and speed in the Single, Long roll and Paradiddle.
And the last lesson is a solo
applying the 7 Rudiments on the drumset.
Hope you enjoyed it
Have fun studying. See ya!
