This hospital in one way shape or form over the last hundred years
has really been a beacon within our community of taking care of people
who have been injured and hurt.
We see 3,000 trauma admissions a year.
If you think that somewhere from 10 to 20 percent of those
are directly related to domestic violence,
that means two to three everyday come through our doors,
basically with some form of an injury requiring trauma activation,
the worst of the worst related to domestic violence and domestic abuse.
And while this hospital is probably one of the best in the country at picking
up the pieces, if we simply react to the problem, we’re behind the times.
And so what we’re trying to do is put forth the education effort
to break the cycle and try and teach young men and women that there are
other ways of dealing with their problems,
there are other ways to handle tense situations that they may be in,
and ways that they can get out of a domestic violence situation themselves.
And so we’ve partnered with the Center for Women and Families
d the Jefferson County Public School System to develop and implement
a program of education for high risk use within our community
so that we can try and break that cycle and be proactive
instead of reactive in the ways that we take care of these people.
