What I like to do is take multiple storylines
and weave them together, hopefully, with a theme, or something.
so, some of the things I'd written are from years ago, almost like journal entries
and others are from a free write exercise
And I try, especially in solo work, to get up and move around
so that it's not just personal essay. That's something I try to work against.
I try to take the personal but explode it out into something universal, mix it up a little.
This is for all three of you
Do you ever just feel like get up and write?
I never get up
and say I have to write.
I write late at night.
But, I have... You know, I'm still grappling with the idea
of calling myself a writer.
I guess I do write, but really I'm an actor, I've been an actor for many years,
and I'm a storyteller
But I have written hilariously illegible things when my kids wouldn't go to sleep and made me stay in the room forever!
And I was in the dark, with a journal in my chair. And I actually wrote a piece that may turn into something,
in the dark one time. So, sometimes, sometimes you're driven to it.
Do these stories change? Laura,
What you did tonight, is it the same in some way
I mean, I know you've done it before.
No, I haven't. You've never done this before? No, this was the first time ever.
Finished writing it about two days ago.
No, I haven't.
I've told the story of my Energy Awareness class
at holiday dinners for years!
That's a story that's true that I've told as a stand alone, but not
written down or anything
and my mom, I actually wrote in the program, my mom was like, "you should write that down"
and then I did and I figured out a way to make it
more interesting to me.
but do they change?
you know, if I may,
yes and no,
it's me and it's autobioraphical
and so -- yes --
a challenge with that
is sometimes you go back and you're like, oh my gosh, I'm saying the same thing again.
Oh, that's still me. And one time I did a piece that I thought was totally different, and this woman came up to me and she goes, "It's the same stuff!"
It was supposed to be complimentary, and I was like, "oh!"
But, I think, yes it changes, I mean, you change...
and it's interesting actually to revisit; I did recently resurrect a piece that I did
before I had kids and
from a slightly different time in life
seven years ago,
It was interesting; it was still me, but it was a different me.
