Hi my name is Lincoln Ward. I'm the director of the Austin Tennis Center here in Austin,
Texas and also a USPTA Certified Teaching Pro. Today we are going to talk about what
racket stiffness is. Your tennis racket is, there are a variety of tennis rackets out
there made out of a variety of different material compositions. They each help to create a different
type of stiffness or weight. Your stiffness in your racket will help you determine how
much give and take the racket is going to have, how much forgiveness you are going to
have when you are swinging your racket. The stiffer the frame the less forgiveness you
are going to get. The more flexible the frame the more forgiveness you are going to get.
However, the more stiff your racket is, the more power you are going to get. The more
flexible the racket, the less power. So there is give and take in there. You want to find
something that is nice and in between. If you want to have power and flexibility you
want to go for a middle of the road type of racket. Even a very flexible frame you are
not going to be able to see the frame flex, it is just over pressure when the ball hits
the strings, your racket will deform its shape very little, not enough for you to physically
tell but just enough to affect the vibration of the impact. That's the stiffness of your
tennis racket.
