Hey everyone, long time no see
This is Hikosaemon
Sorry it's been so long
I've had lots going on, not just the baby
My PC hard disk broke...
And work and stuff has been crazy busy
Meh, that stuff happens sometimes
But I wanted to make a video for the first time in a while
Lately, even when I don't edit vids, I still use Twitter
And enjoy various conversations there
Talking in English and Japanese
About all kinds of stuff
Sometimes I bring up comments I get on my vids
There have been a lot of topics lately
Sometimes I start conversations to get advice from Japanese and foreigners
So there was this interesting comment I got the other day
Actually it's a comment I've had a few times
I thought I would bring it up on Twitter to talk about
So, the comment concerns something you will all realize
Which is that I often use the word "ore" to refer to myself in Japanese
I even use "ore" in polite language
Although sometimes I will ease back and use "boku" instead
If I'm speaking honorific Japanese, or being careful or at work
Then I use "watashi", although I don't think I've ever used "watakushi"
I adjust which word I used based on the setting
As I was taught to do studying Japanese
Although I guess I never studied the word "ore"
I try to speak like the Japanese people around me
I read the signals about what is going on and how it is appropriate to speak
And I guess that is how I arrived at this style of speaking
So in this way, even in my videos
So if you ask me what kind of approach to Japanese I take in these videos
Well, I like to talk to you guys like I am talking to someone I know, a friend
I realize there isn't really a settled way of talking in videos
Of course if this was NHK or something, I would be a little more formal
I wouldn't say "ore"
But there again, people on written blogs tend to use normal spoken Japanese
At least that's how I see it
So my question today is
What I want to ask you all is this:
How should people talk in these kinds of videos?
Is it okay just to talk in casual Japanese like this?
Just to talk normally
Or should it be a bit more formal like on television?
I know there are people who don't like the word "ore"
In my experience, they are nearly all women
Who don't like it as a kind of rough/term that men use
Also, people who teach foreigners Japanese
Often want foreigners to speak the best most proper Japanese possible
They want high class Japanese
And to cut out low-class
and to cut down on rougher words like "ore"
I've heard that opinion before
"You really shouldn't speak like that"
Is what I sometimes get
But there again, when I put the topic out on Twitter
I mean, in the beginning, I was taught to use "boku"
So I used it a lot, and then one day when I was a Uni student
A cute Japanese girl warned me "you use that word too much..."
"It makes it sound like you have an Oedipus Complex"
... Well, I don't have one of those, so what should I say?
She told me it was cooler for guys to use "ore"
So I've tried to use it in good balance
What do you think - do people who say "boku" too much sound like Momma's boys?
Is "ore" too rough?
When I'm talking casually like this
Do you think this is the right level of politeness for using in videos?
I want to hear what people think
So please leave a comment or video response
Is this way of talking okay
Or should I make it something better for other foreigners to imitate
A more textbook, upper class level of politeness
Let me know what you think. Peace!

Twitter
Peace!
