No, Christoph Eßer and his friends did not steal the corner flags from the nearby Rhein-Energie-Stadion in Cologne.
The “Pole”, in German “Pfahl”, has to be hit with a football.
This is Buschball, quite a bit like golf but with one important difference.
Christoph: “A famous Buschball player once said that
‘Buschball is golf for people who still have sex! ‘
and that actually applies pretty well to it.”
In Buschball, you really have to be a little crazy.
One after the other, the players set up the Pole – in almost any position they wish.
But you shouldn’t put it too far up since there’s a maximum height of 1.4 metres.
Among pedestrians there is a lot of confusion about the strange game.
However, the self-proclaimed ambassador of Buschball already recruits young players for the young sport.
“This is really funny.”
“I like it.”
“It’s fun.”
The player who needs the least kicks – you guessed it – wins.
By now there even are tournaments on a regular basis
although there are only about 200 players.
But a Buschball league is merely a matter of time.
“It actually is a dream and big goal of ours to create region-based leagues,
for example here in the area around Cologne
so that several teams can play against each other.”
Buschball is in Christoph’s opinion capable of being a mass sport.
After all, all you need is a Pole and a football
and with a bit of luck you can score the legendary Pole-in-One.
