The high mountains and lack of roads make parts of Afghanistan hard,
if not impossible, to reach on the ground.
Air Force Staff Sergeant Michael Jackson shows us how US troops train Afghans
to use air power to help their people.
[Jackson] Members of the Afghan National Army Air Corps
trained on medical evacuation missions with US soldiers
from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade's Marne "DUSTOFF" on Bagram Airfield.
The Afghans went through a simulated MEDEVAC
as part of the Combined Action Flight Medic Academy.
I think they've learned a lot.
The fact that it was both
the Afghan flight medic and myself in the aircraft
treating the patient speaks volumes for what we're trying to do here in Afghanistan.
[through interpreter] Putting a tourniquet on the injured patient
and transferring to the helicopter was very interesting for me.
It was my first time doing something like that, and it was very good experience.
[Jackson] The goal of the Afghan Flight Medic Academy
is to enable these students to become instructors
and share this knowledge with their comrades
so they can get as proficient at doing MEDEVACs as their American counterparts.
