Hi! We are Sandy and Darren Van Soye and together we are Trekking the Planet!
On January 28, 2012, we left from San Diego, California on a 424-day journey around the
world with the goal of getting kids excited about geography.
We are visiting some of the most remote places on the planet to highlight the cultural and
natural significance of the world. To date, we have journeyed over 35,000 miles,
visiting 20 countries on the continents of Oceana, Asia and Europe.
We have also completed treks in five locations including Tasmania, Laos, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan
and Sweden. Before we left on our journey, we spoke to
thousands of children about geography. We continue to speak to classrooms while on
the road including those in American Samoa, Thailand, Laos, Nepal and Latvia.
Before our trip is over, we plan to visit another 30 countries in Europe, Africa and
South America before returning home in March 2013.
As we travel, we publish a subscription-based newsletter that includes articles, photos
and short video documentaries from the road about the places we have visited.
Our newsletters also include a four-page education module containing information about the people
and places we visit. Our materials are consistent with the standards
set forth by the US-based National Council for Geographic Education as well as the UK
National Geography Curriculum. These materials can serve as supplements to
information already being taught in the classroom. They can be a "jumping off point" for classroom
discussion or group projects that cover one or more of the places we will be visiting.
Every education module ends with an invitation to formulate and send us questions about our
journey by email. To date, 850 educators from 20 countries have
subscribed to receive our materials. This figure represents over 50,000 students.
Non-educators are also welcome to subscribe as well.
And the best news of all? Our materials are completely free with no hidden offers or future
obligations. Trekking the Planet - Discovering the Cultural
and Natural Significance of the World.
