Hi, I am Estelle Winsett, and I am the Assistant Dean of Career Services here at the Law School.
You will need me to help you find a job, so we will start off as you are a 1L, we will
give you a little bit of time to get acclimated, it is going to take you a little bit of time
to get used to Law School, it is a little bit different from undergrad, um, but the
career services has an orientation specifically for 1Ls, and it will be at the first of November.
So at that time we will introduce you all to Simplicity, which is our online job posting
system. And then we will tell you all about the different programs that Career Services
offers to our students. As a 1L, you are going to want to start working on your resume. It
is going to be a little different from your undergrad resumes, so we will help you craft
a Law School resume, and then we will meet with you one on one in January to talk to
you about what your thoughts are at this stage in Law School, where you are headed as far
as your career path, um, and then we will help you try to figure out what you want to
do for the upcoming summer. So, other programs that Career Services offers is we do resume
reviews throughout the year, we can do individual career counseling sessions. So starting in
November, if you are interested in meeting with either myself or Callie Caldwell, who
is our Public Interest Counselor, you can come in and see Ms. Hope who will set you
up with an appointment, or you can shoot us an email. Other ways that we help you guys,
we have a lot of programs, specifically at lunchtime, where we have attorneys coming
in that talk to you a little bit about what their practices are like and give you tips
on what you should be doing as a law student. We also have coffee Tuesdays, which is a big
hit here, we will give you some caffeine, you can come in and meet some of the other
second and third year law students, which is really helpful, you can start to form some
friendships and perhaps a mentor. So we are here to help you, our office is located in
room 236, it is right by the elevators, it is on the other side of the administration,
administrative wing, and our offices are from 8:30 to 5:00 o'clock. One other thing to mention
is we do have a mandatory pro bono requirement, so Callie Caldwell, who is our Public Interest
Counselor, will have an orientation for you in January, and she will go over what you
need to do to get your 40 hours of pro bono requirements in before you graduate. But if
you have any questions, we are always here so feel free to stop by and let us know how
we can help.
