All right, ok. So....
hiiii. I wanted to do a quick video just to keep
you all posted on what we've been doing and give you some information on what's been happening
at the National Assembly here in Quebec.
You've all donated, you've all been part of this campaign so it's just fair that you get
the information. Writing would be a bit too long so I'm just giving you a quick update.
You can always write me, anytime. If you need more information, if you need documentation,
if you need links, you can totally do that. Just shoot me an email.
So pretty much, two days ago, on Tuesday, ya, Tuesday night, the National Assembly voted
an amendement to a bill that's in front of the National Assembly to remove surgical requirements
for trans people. So what it means is that a trans person would not have to have surgical
modification of their body to be able to get their gender marker change.
So it's a "yes! Awesome!" We just like, achieve something pretty fracking cool right?
Well, let's hold on for a second.
The bill has been voted not at the National Assembly but in a commission; so they said
"ok, we feel comfortable with this. We want to present it to all the MNAs" so now it has
to be voted in by the whole of the National Assembly.
We think it's gonna go. We don't think that there's gonna be a problem but once this is
passed, there's a need for regulation which means that once you have a law, you need to
tell the administrative apparatus, every governmental agency, how to deal with that new law. That's
in a regulation. And we have some information that is a bit scary; of what could be put
in there.
So, some of the stuff that could be put in there is that they could ask say
"ok, you're not gonna be required any body modification BUT, you're gonna have to wait
five years. So you're gonna have to live five year in your "new"gender or the gender you
always new you were or the one that you are less not comfortable with and you're gonna
have to wait five years and THEN you'll be able to ask for a gender marker change.
Even if it's two years.
It's still pretty problematic. It's not something that should be done and should be asked of
trans people.
The other thing is they might ask for "copious amount" of letters and gate keeping. So they
might say "ok, we're gonna allow you to have these but you'll need two letters or three
letters" or one from a doctor and then one from two psychologists or one psychologist
and one psychiatrist and maybe they'll ask that the person has a PhD in Quantum physics;
we have no idea!
The only thing we know is that now, the regulation can be very dangerous. And we know that the
regulation can actually cause more harm than what's being offered right now.
Because, let's remember that some people do need and want those surgeries.
And we'd tell those people that even though they achieved their goal and actually went
and got their surgery, that it would not be good anymore. So that's very very scary. Which
brings us to the fact that, ok we're gonna wait before we celebrate anything. The potential
is there but we're gonna wait and we'll keep you up to date. It brings us to; what about
the court case now.
Well the court case is still going ahead.
We had three things we wanted off the civil code in Quebec. We wanted the surgical requirement,
we wanted the minimum age and the canadian citizenship. Two of them are not there.
People will be left behind so we are still going forward with our court case. And we're
still going forward to defend and promote rights for every single trans and gender divers
people in Quebec.
So again, if you have any questions don't hesitate; give me a call and the french version
of this video will follow very soon.
Thank you
