>> ANCHOR: An RIT graduate is being honored for her work in raising awareness about the
environment. It’s how she did it that’s earning her praise. Here’s Katrina Irwin
with her Go Green report. >> REPORTER: Sarah Kirchoff has taken an out
of the box, or should we say can, approach to teaching fellow students about the environment.
>> SARAH KIRCHOFF: It is an enduring issue that we're going to have to deal with and
especially for my generation it's important we deal with it now.
>> REPORTER: So as part of her thesis in 2008, she used her graphic design skills to
raise awareness about trash. >> SARAH KIRCHOFF: Sometimes the best projects
evolve from taking something you normally wouldn't be able to make into art and really
turning it in that direction. >> REPORTER: She set up three different installations
centered around trash bins in the school’s student union. Each one had a slightly different
message about our landfills and how they're filling up with trash.
>> SARAH KIRCHOFF: I focused on the student union because that was really a sight on campus
where there was a lot of consumption. There are a lot of bottles, trash, everything being
generated around that area. >> REPORTER: The response from students was
great, but her project also caught the eye of experts in the field. She was awarded the
A Lot with a Little Award from the society for environmental graphic design. With this
week’s Go Green report, I’m Katrina Irwin.
