Prof. Subir
Chattopadhyay: The University of York is part of a distinguished group of
UK universities, which is called the Russell Group. Students should
consider coming to the University of York primarily because it has an
excellent reputation for both teaching as well as research.
Prof. Nicky
Milner: I research the Stone Age, particularly how people were living
right at the end of the ice age when climate was changing very rapidly.
We
had a very exciting discovery a few years ago. We discovered the earliest
house in Britain and with that we did a press release and it went
worldwide. We try and do as much integration of research and teaching as we
can in archaeology. And so, first year students come on a field school
which is a part of our excavation and also we have Masters students and
PhD. students all involved in the research as well. So all doing different
projects associated with our excavations.
Swapneel: The University of York is part of the prestigious Russell
Group. A group that represents a group of institutions that stand for the
quality of research that they do, the outstanding learning and teaching
experience, as well as the strong links they have with the market outside.
The department that I am working with is actually known for its world
leading research especially in the areas of psychology and environment.
The
department of environment here at the University of York has many
partnerships like with the Stockholm Environment Institute, etc.
The good
thing is that the students of the department can actually benefit from the
expertise of these institutes in terms of lectures, workshops,
or even
internship opportunities.
Emily Timson: The Management School has lots of initiatives with regards
to improving student employability. One of these is our IBM Award which
sponsors a module that we have called Business Planning. This is a module
where students work in a group and come up with a business concept and then
the best business idea is awarded at the IBM Business Planning Award.
Prof: Bob
Doherty: There is a number of areas where we excel in terms of our
connections with industry. Every Wednesday afternoon in the management
school we have what is called Master Classes where students are able to
come in and listen to a leading business figure. This year we've had Sir
Stuart Rose who was ex-CEO of Marks & Spencers who came in to talk to the
students. Some of our programmes are also credited...
Gayle: Studying history and philosophy at York is really all about
getting to the heart of an issue or the heart of problems and working in
small groups to dissect that and analyse that. I think that's something
I've done in every job I've had since really. What I do now is I work in
the Careers Department. I am Assistant Director for Operations and Employee
Liaisons. How I got into that was really as a result of studying at York.
Liz Smith: York graduates do all sorts of interesting things when they
leave us, from starting their own business to working with charities,
to
gaining places on graduate training schemes with big global recruiters.
