-First, let's start with the devices themselves.
The electronic circuitry of these breathalyzer machines
is vulnerable to being distorted by radio frequency
interference.
And this can come from police scanners, police radios,
teletypes, cell phones, any other electronic devices that's
at the site.
This RFI, radio frequency interference,
has been shown to render falsely high readings.
Then these breathalyzers require regular maintenance,
calibration, and accuracy checks.
Often times, this is not done, or not done correctly.
Moreover, the breathalyzers is are
prone to pick up all kinds of other substances
that they mistake for alcohol.
The result being false positives, or falsely
high readings.
And in fact, these devices have been
shown to register a BAC even in people
who have had absolutely nothing to drink.
So there's all these problems with the devices themselves.
