On April 22nd, 2010, the Student Union Memorial Center
joined in an Earth Day celebration
with the University of Arizona and the Tucson community.
The Student Union Sustainability Committee
set up a booth on the mall
to show spirit for Earth Day, and to
demonstrate the Student Unions' sustainable practices
and initiatives.
David Mitchell: Well, what we're doing is
just showcasing all the different things that
the Student Union does, to be sustainable initiatives.
David: So, whenever we decide on something
whether it's purchasing things or initiating a new program
we consider social, environmental, and economic factors
as the three components to sustainability.
David: For example, when we decided to go with reflective roof coating
we found that there was an economic advantage to it.
David: We would save on heating and cooling costs.
And then environmental, is that we're not using electricity to generate A/C to cool down the building
David: So there's benefits to both.
Jon Levengood: So, this is some organic bread that we feature in the Deli
and we're serving it with a wild salmon spread.
Jon: Wild salmon is a sustainable choice.
Jon: We're handing out these little Monterrey Bay Aquarium 'Seafood Watch' guides.
Jon: In the Cellar Bistro, all of the seafood comes out of the 'best choices' category.
Jon: And it's flavoured with herbs that we grew on top of our herb garden on the roof of the Student Union.
Girl: Wow - there's a garden up there?
Jon: There is - right above kind of the Cactus Grill level, we have a small but thriving herb garden going.
Girl: Wow, that's really good.
Narration: With demonstrations and giveaways, the Earth Day booth proved to be a great success.
The Student Union will be working on many more sustainability initiatives over the upcoming year
to present at next year's U of A Earth Day celebration.
