This is supposed to be a game about violence. I don't know. Strikes me as a game about love.
In a sick, demented kind of way. But when I say it's a game about love, that doesn't
mean it's some kind of love story. What I mean is...just as Smash Bros. is more about
its characters, so too is Injustice.
And the love their fans have for them. See, if you're expecting this to be...some
kind of groundbreaking fighter, you're using the wrong Bat Signal, Gordon. It's a really
good fighter, but...it's a better piece of fan service. It's fun to play, it plays really
well...but what you'll remember from Injustice is what happens between the fights.
And who's fighting in the first place.
So Injustice is, again, basically a Smash Bros. game for fans of DC Comics. The difference
being...this one's more focused on story. And that story's...kind of awesome. Somehow,
the Joker got himself a nuclear bomb. And somehow, he attached it to Lois Lane. And
somehow, he forced Superman to set it off, destroying not only Metropolis, but Superman's
faith. In everything.
From that premise, the game...kind of goes all Back to the Future. The Justice League
tries to stop the bomb from going off, but they end up in a parallel dimension, like
Back to the Future II. Turns out, in this alternate reality, a mentally tortured Superman
has decided that...the only way to absolutely stop evil is to stop free will.
And so he takes control. Of, like, everything.
It's really cool to see a character like Superman...essentially turn heel. His desire to protect ends up pushing
him to destroy, which leaves our dimension jumpers to stop him. But from there...things
can get a bit confusing. And at times, Injustice kind of overreaches a bit.
In addition to the campaign, there's just a wealth of modes and content. Injustice features
a nice roster, too, with 24 playable characters. And once they start to pound each other, the
gameplay feels very satisfying. In fact, if you've played the latest Mortal Kombat, you'll
have a good idea what to expect from Injustice, as its from the same developer and is largely
cut from the same cloth.
Now, that said, Injustice isn't exactly Mortal Kombat with DC characters. There have been
tweaks, specifically things like interactive environments and combo breakers. But again,
its mechanics are kind of the least interesting thing about this game. I mean, I'm not even
a comic book guy, and I geeked out over Injustice.
The fighting is delicious, but I stayed for the pancakes.
