This Texas State Capitol Memorial for volunteer firemen was erected in 1896 by the State Firemen's
Association. It consists of a bronze fireman carrying a child in his left hand and a lantern
in his right, atop a large granite base inscribed with the names of fallen firefighters. The
names date back to 1877 and new names are added at the request of local fire departments.
It is now known that the information listed on the monuments contains a few inaccuracies
and errors. But officials decided the monument was too valuable historically to be altered
with corrections.
