Here at Sunderland we offer single honours Psychology and we also offer combined subjects
Psychology with Counselling, and in 2012 we were rated 6th for overall satisfaction out
of 110 Psychology departments in the UK.
I guess I chose psychology because its always been a great interest of mine and such a versatile
subject, so there's kind of something in it for everyone.
The University of Sunderland was a choice of mine because, the people really. It was
just like such a welcoming group.
The majority of the teaching we do here at Sunderland is traditionally lectures and seminars
but we also try to introduce new, innovative teaching techniques such as problem-based
learning and enquiry-based teaching.
In lectures we have, like, massive groups, and we're all sort of presented to and we
sort of learn things that way. In seminars it's more group work.
You can actually get in a group, work together, work on slides, work on pictures, and then
you end up being able to create something and have a product at the end of it.
The staff/student relationship at the Psychology department is so good; it's so easy to find
them, they're very easily accessible through email, telephone. I've knocked on their doors
plenty of times and, until now they've not shut it, so I'll keep going.
The research the students are able to do on their final year project is very varied and
this is a real advantage as well because it gives students the freedom of choice.
We prepare students for going out after their degree into further qualifications or further
employment.
The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society; that means graduating with a 2:2
and above gives you the first steps to a career in psychology.
A great deal of our graduates have gone on to different careers in psychology, working
in areas such as clinical psychology, educational psychology and forensic psychology.
Psychology's got so many transferrable skills, you can do anything.
I'd definitely recommend this department to other students, because of the support from
the staff, I just think they're amazing and they're always there for anything you need.
It's a really welcoming department and you've got all the help that you need.
I'd describe the psychology department as being fun, interesting and supportive.
Dynamic, vibrant and friendly.
Fun-filled education.
Three isn't enough!
