Travelling safely, confidently, and independently on fixed route Durham Region Transit is easier
than you may think.
All new Durham Region Transit Buses are low floor with entrances level with the sidewalk
for easy boarding.
Look for the international symbol of access to identify an accessible DRT bus.
The ramp eliminates stairs for passengers who use a wheelchair, scooter, walker, cane
or crutches.
Anyone who finds stairs difficult will notice it is easy to board a DRT Low floor bus.
Move forward up the ramp to the wheelchair securing area and lock your brake.
Operators are concerned about the safety of all passengers at all times and are specially
trained to operate ramps and secure wheelchairs and vacant scooters.
Wait until the ramp is fully deployed, and look for a signal from the Operator to begin
boarding.
When travelling with a child in a stroller
Remember to lock the brake on the stroller and hold it securely before the bus begins
to move.
Always keep aisle clear for other passengers.
If the wheelchair area is occupied move to the back of the bus.
When the bus comes to a complete stop move to the front exit.
For a full view of the exit area - pull the stroller behind you. When exiting the bus,
lift the stroller’s back wheels slightly for a gentle and safe landing on the curb.
All passengers should wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before leaving their
seat to exit.
DRT’s objective is to make your travel experience easy and enjoyable. If you are new to transit
here are some transit tips
Route maps and schedules are available at www.durhamregiontransit.com and at ticket
sales locations throughout the region.
Each route is numbered and displays a route name, describing the area of service.
Use your schedule to locate the bus stop nearest your starting point and the bus stop nearest
to your destination and note designated accessible bus symbol
Plan to be at your bus stop 5 minutes before the bus will arrive.
Ensure your clothing and backpacks clear the doors.
Pay your fare with a ticket, pass or exact cash - Operators do not sell fares or carry
change.
Ask for a transfer when you pay your fare if you are continuing your trip on another
bus.
Show your transfer if transferring from another bus.
If you're not sure which bus you should take call DRT Customer Service at 1-866-247-0055
for help and learn what to expect from the start to the finish of your trip
Sometimes you may not get a seat. Hold the grab rails when moving AND when stopped.
Do not walk to the exit doors until the bus has come to a complete stop.
Always stand back from the yellow caution line at the front of the bus, behind the operator
so the bus operator has a clear view of the road.
Wait for the bus to pass for a clear view before crossing the road.
Travelling on DRT really is easier than you may think.
