Gold preparations are a class of drugs that are commonly used to treat patients with rheumatoid
arthritis, or RA, who do not respond to other forms of RA therapy.
It is not well understood how gold preparations work to treat RA. However, it has shown to
improve arthritis symptoms including painful or tender and swollen joints and morning stiffness.
Gold preparations share a few common side effects such as diarrhea, stomach pain, and
nausea. Some examples of medications in this class
are Ridaura, also known as auranofin. Gold preparations share a few serious side
effects, including gold toxicity. For more information on other serious side effects,
talk to your doctor or pharmacist. It is always a good idea to ask questions
about your medication if you are unsure or if you experience something out of the ordinary.
