The history of the Carl Zeiss group, world leader in the optical and optoelectronics industry
with production units located in 4 continents, goes back to the mid nineteenth century.
Carl Zeiss caters for the industrial, medical, optical and fashion sectors
with solutions that are one step ahead of the times.
From surgical microscopes to diagnostic systems for ophthalmology and optical lithography,
solutions for industrial measurement technology, lenses for prescription glasses, cameras, video cameras, binoculars and telescopes:
this is just a taste of the vast product range offered by the Carl Zeiss group.
We spoke to Mr Friedel Bücker
Director Marketing and Product Management of Carl Zeiss Vision International GmbH.
Your range of ophthalmic lenses is really vast.
Can you briefly explain what different types of lenses the Zeiss brand can offer?
Zeiss offers a vast array of spectacle lenses in mineral glass,
for example single-vision bifocals progressives and lenses for special sight requirements in the workplace.
As regards the materials, Zeiss offers everything, with indices ranging from 1.5 to 1.9 and even photochromic lenses.
Another key element of yours is the attention paid to sun radiation problems.
How do you manage to perfectly combine efficiency, comfort and design?
Our solution is called the Umbra treatment.
It is a high absorption coating that is vacuum deposited on the front surface of the lens, allowing for 25%, 75% or 85% light reduction levels.
This vacuum deposition process can be carried out on all Carl Zeiss lenses in mineral glass.
The attractive brown tint guarantees realistic rendition of all colours.
The deposition process produces an even tinting of the lens, regardless of its dioptric power.
Sun lenses with 75% or 85% light reduction protect the eyes from excessive reflection
and offer safe protection from ultraviolet sun rays.
What other novelties can we expect from mineral glass in the optical field?
Today, mineral glass is the most suitable material for making glass lenses for specific fields of application.
That is why major novelties can be foreseen in the mineral glass sector in the future.
We also intend to act on these incentives to continue with developments in the sector.
What does the RealGlass project mean to you?
Mineral glass enjoys an important market positioning,
because it is unrivalled, if not irreplaceable, in certain fields of application.
The development of this material will lead to the creation of really special products.
RealGlass offers the chance to accelerate this development and spread the sector's great potential.
Thanks a lot for the conversation Mr. Bücker.
Many thanks from my side.
