So we already know what short form improv is, what is long form improv? Long form improv
still uses the audience to get a suggestion, a theme, a word - like "orange" - and then
they will base all of their scenes on that word. They will do longer scenes. There's
no gags, there's no gimmicks. Sometimes they'll come back to a scene. Sometimes they'll jump
ahead ten years in time. They build a beautiful story and it comes to a natural close. That's
long form improv. What about sketch comedy? That's pre-scripted. So sometimes improv can
lead to sketch comedy. "Jane, I'm sorry your dog is dead." "Oh, no! What am I going to
do? But now this means I can go to Hawaii!" "Hey, that would make a great sketch!" "Hey,
we should write that down!" "That would be awesome." So, you see we can use improv to
create sketch comedy. Stand up comedy is where a comedian - usually one person - has some
pre-written material that they deliver to the audience in a joke format. "Hey...good
morning Seattle! Hoo, I just flew in and boy are my arms tired!" So those are examples
of the different kinds of comedy.
