Listen, I dont know anything about you...Cocoto. I dont even know if Im saying your name
right. Cocoto. Sounds like a weird Japanese soft drink. Youre all jumping about, willy
nilly. Ill be real honest with you, Cocoto.
You kinda look like a Pokey Mans.
And Im a loyal Pikachu guy.
So I looked into this guythis Cocoto. Beverage. Turns out...hes no Pokey Mans. Cocotos
more of an...all-purpose type. Dude does it all. On WiiWare, he had some fishing game,
he had a platformer...he refuses to live in a ball. I respect that, from Cocoto. And now,
hes back. With a Breakout clone.
Thats one ambitious little ***. Cat!
Cocotos in a bit of a bind, though. These f*ckhead aliens are trying to destroy these
planets, which are evidently very important to poor Cocoto, because he takes it upon himself
to defend them one by one. With a freaking shield. And hey, you know what happens when
shields get mixed up with balls.
Things get broken.
Cocoto Alien Brick Breaker is one of the most obviously named games in history. You control
Cocoto on the bottom of the screen in gameplay pulled right from...well, name your favorite
brick-breaking game. And of course, the game is packed with some fun gimmicks. The aliens
move, some have shields, some spawn new aliens.
All die before the cold, bloody hand of Cocoto.
I really like the way this game places that Breakout gameplay into the template of a more
character-based game. Almost like a platformer, in a sense. The aliens come in waves, but
they approach each planet from different sides. So you have to run from invasion to invasion,
and time is always of the essence. It really gives that simple gameplay a bigger sense
of purpose, which is clever.
There are also some pretty cool power-ups, some of which just decimate fools. So as hard
as some of the formations might get, it make it pretty satisfying when a power-up drops
and you can just lay waste to these alien mofos.
The game has a cute look, and its really colorful...although, it is a bit lacking in
character. Like I said, Cocoto feels like a character from any game, so...theres
not much character appeal, per se. But the boss battles are fun, and I like the way the
aliens grimace when a ball approaches. Thats a nice little touch.
In addition to the campaign, theres also a classic mode and arcade mode, which are
variations on the same idea. The game does have StreetPass support, which is great, and
its got a lot of trophies to earn...like little achievements, for each level. So...the
amount of content here is actually really nice for an eShop title.
On the negative side...yeah, the character design is a little generic. And aiming your
bounces can be tough, so...sometimes, it just devolves into indiscriminately bouncing balls
all over the place. Nothing is worse than indiscriminate ball bouncing. But I had a
pretty good time with this game. Its retro gameplay with a few modern sensibilities,
wrapped up in a pretty nice package on the eShop.
Its Cocoto Alien Brick Breaker.
Crisp, refreshing Cocoto.
