The Tony Awards are coming up and two movies-turned-musicals will be going head to head for the big award.
Hi everyone I’m Brian Corsetti and Deadline.com has all the details.
The recent trend of turning Hollywood movies into Broadway musicals has been a huge success
- “Newsies” based on the 1992 film starring Christian Bale -- has been getting rave reviews
and just picked up a Tony nomination for best musical. It's about a group of young depression-era
paperboys who dream of having a better life.
It’ll be going up against “Once” based on the 2006 film about an Irish street musician
and a Czech immigrant who are drawn together by their love for music. The original runaway
indie hit won an academy award for best song “Falling Slowly” and paved the way for
its very well-received Broadway debut.
This isn’t the first time producers have turned box-office success into a Tony win.
Monty Python's Spamalot and Billy Elliot were adapted from films, along with the smash hit
The Producers, which picked up a record-breaking 12 awards in 2001.
The 2012 Tony Awards kick off on June 10th on CBS. They’ll be hosted by “How I Met
Your Mother Star” Neil Patrick Harris - his third time MCing the show. For more movie
