My name is Charles Mathias with intercultural innovations where we are passionate about
culture. oin us over the next few weeks as we have
a few videos that describe who we are what we do and why we love what
we do.
At Intercultural Innovations we are focused on helping you develop those important skills
that will equip you to be a global success. Specific skills are necessary.
You know how, when you fill up a job application, there's always that section titled “experience.”
Well, the employer wants to know about our experience, because, I guess we think that
we learn a lot from experience. But in my experience, I look back on experiences
that I've had and find that I've really learned very little.
I realize I really didn't learn much from them.
So why is that? Why is it that sometimes we learn so much from an experience and sometimes
we don't? Sometimes we are not prepared in advance to
learn from that experience. We haven't prepared ourselves to learn from
that experience. Learning from cross-cultural opportunities
doesn't happen automatically. And I think this is particularly true with
cross-cultural experiences. When you have a cross-cultural opportunity
it's important to prepare in advance to make the most of that experience.
To make it truly a learning experience. Now how do we prepare in advance to make the most
of these opportunities? The has to some preparation that goes into
it beforehand. What can you do in advance?
What kind of preparation can you do to make the most of that experience?
Well it takes more than just information about other cultures. It takes a specific set of
skills. I may have a manual for an aircraft engine.
All that information. But without practical skills I'm in not condition
to be physically working on your airplane. So specific skills are necessary.
I've heard that carpenters used to have these well organized, and thoroughly equipped,
even ornately designed toolboxes. And a person would check each carpenters toolbox
very carefully and examine each tool before deciding whom to hire.
So having the best toolbox would give a carpenter the advantage in hjs local marketplace.
In the same way, for the global marketplace, your toolbox, your cross-cultural skills,
need to be in the best condition possible. So remember, a refined skill set in advance
is necessary preparation for making the most of your cross-cultural
opportunities.
